Rev2 Timer Board Manual

This is the online version of the Rev2 Board Assembly Manual.

Basic electronics soldering skills and component identification are required to construct the kit if you order it unassembled.

You can download the complete printable manual in Adobe PDF format here.
You can also get a Timer Board Component Identification Guide with photos showing each part.

The gray stripe on the electrolytic capacitors indicate the negative (-) side. That wire goes in the hole opposite the hole marked with a +. Notice that C5 is turned backwards from all the rest of the caps on the board. The gray stripe on the diodes should be to the left, as shown above. The red resistor network should also have a black stripe indicating pin 1, which goes at the left end. The 7805 and both IC chips must also be put in as pictured. Do not insert the chips into the sockets until you have finished all the soldering.

Connector Reference

This is a summary of the Connectors. For more details see the full Timer Board Connector Reference

Connector J1 - Serial Communication
GNDconnects to pin 5 of a DB9 Serial RS-232 Connector
Rxconnects to pin 3 of a DB9 Serial RS-232 Connector
Txconnects to pin 2 of a DB9 Serial RS-232 Connector
Communications Settings are: 9600 Baud, 8-Bits, No Parity, 1-Stop Bit, No Flow Control

Connector J2 - Power
GNDCommon Ground (Negative voltage)
+Positive power input, +9 to +24 volts
If you are not using the display driver board, a 9 to 12 volt power supply is recommended.
If you are using the display driver, you should use a power supply rated at at least 15 volts.

Connector J3 - ICSP
1MCLR
2VDD
3GND
4PGD
5PGC
6PGM
The ICSP Connector type is the standard used by Olimex ICSP programmers.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
There are several different pin layouts used for ICSP connectors.
Be sure to verify your programmer uses the right type, or you could damage the chip, the programmer, or both!
Your programmer's ICSP connector must use the pin layout shown here.

Connector J4 - Lane Sensors
GNDCommon ground for sensors - connects to all phototransistors
1Connects to Lane 1 phototransistor
2Connects to Lane 2 phototransistor
3Connects to Lane 3 phototransistor
4Connects to Lane 4 phototransistor
5Connects to Lane 5 phototransistor
6Connects to Lane 6 phototransistor
Unused lanes should be left unconnected and turned off in the firmware.

Connector J5 - Finish Line Tower
GCommon ground
RdyConnects to Ready LED
ResConnects to (optional) Reset Switch
Leave unconnected if you are not using a reset switch
+5v+5v regulated power for finish line illumination LEDs

Connector J6 - Starting Gate
GCommon ground
StrConnects to Starting Gate Detector Switch (REQUIRED)
SolConnects to (optional) starting gate solenoid driver circuit Leave unconnected if you are not using a solenoid
DO NOT CONNECT THIS DIRECTLY TO A SOLENOID YOU WILL OVERLOAD THE CIRCUIT AND DAMAGE THE CHIP

The display connector may be used to directly drive 1-inch high digits, or you can plug in the optional driver board to use large 3-inch digits.
